How to spot the new solar panels at Duke Energy’s new Duke Energy Nuclear Energy Plant in Durham
Duke Energy has announced that it will be installing the first solar panels on its newest nuclear plant in North Carolina, a project that will see a total of eight solar panels installed at the facility by the end of 2018.
The utility announced the news in a blog post, which included photos of the panels that will be installed at Duke’s new plant.
The Duke Energy site in Durham, North Carolina is currently home to the plant’s five-megawatt solar farm.
It’s one of the few nuclear plants in the United States to be built entirely with renewable energy sources.
The company has said that the plant will have the capacity to produce 1,000 megawatts of power, which would be enough to power roughly 1,600 homes.
The site will also provide about half of the electricity needed at Duke University in Durham.
In a press release, Duke Energy said that it’s looking forward to “expanding and improving” the site, which is about 100 miles northwest of Durham.
The announcement comes on the heels of Duke Energy announcing earlier this month that it would build two more nuclear plants, one in Louisiana and one in Kentucky, in a move that will bring the company’s total to six plants.
